Department of Malayalam
The Department of Malayalam was established in 1968, to engage the second language classes for the students, at pre-degree level. In 1979, the BA programme in Malayalam was started to cater to the needs of the students who desired to pursue a degree course in Malayalam. Along with Malayalam language, literature, culture and history, Sanskrit is also taught as part of the degree course. All encouragement is provided to foster the creativity of the students while giving due attention to the prescribed syllabus. The students and faculty of the department have produced ten documentaries, on various subjects, during the past four years. In 2016, two books – 1) A Work on the History and Mythology of Local Areas and 2) A poetry collection, were published by the department. The department also has an affiliation with the Folklore Academy, and a Folklore Club is actively maintained by the department, to provide an insight to the students about the folklores and rich cultural heritage of Kerala. Dr Druva Kumaran, Prof. P.Viswanathan, Prof. K.A.Ayyappan Prof. N.Kuttan, Prof. N. Viswambaran, Prof. R.Saraswathikuttiamma, Dr.T.Sudha Kumari, Prof. K.R.Velayudhan , Prof. M.Suresh Babu and the noted short story writer and winner of the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award Dr. V.R.Sudheesh had offered their services as the Heads of the department. The department is currently headed by Dr.Deepesh Karimpunkara.
